the script for the presentation

This is the format that I will use to help me to read it, I rehearsed the script to keep my presentation for 2 mins and I was hard to understand me due to the accent, so I found this format would help me when I am reading it.

Hi, I’m Q

I wanted to answer the question of what is reality and virtual reality?
By Analysing  philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s quote.
“Simulacrum is not a copy of the real,
but becomes truth in its own right:
the hyperreal”

and use our experience in Second Life as the context to analyze it.
To help me, I extracted some texts from the book
“Hello Avatar,
Rise of the Networked Generation”
by B. Coleman,
from the chapter 4 , called Presence.

The text talks about the’ increasing simulation of presence’,
or in another words ‘virtual presence’,
and raise the concern
regarding mistaking the virtual for the real in terms of
‘when simulating presence has become a standard aspect of how we understand a full engagement with one another.’
for example using social networks
instead face to face experience.

So what happened
with people that are not in the same geographical location
as it is the case with Virtual Environment’s module in Second Life
and more specifically the interaction with the class?

The only presence we can all have together
is by ‘virtual presence’.

In the words of Coleman.
“The primary purpose of using an avatar or simulacra of ourselves
is they mark our sense of being together
when we are physically apart”.

In the words of Clay Shirky
“We embraced images with the arrival of ‘cyberspace’ and ‘virtual reality’,
this described a realm
where we could interact with data and interact with one another
without regard of geographic locations.”

So if I put in context the words of Jean Baudrillard.
“Simulacrum is not a copy of the real,
but becomes truth in its own right:
the hyperreal”

Then is Second Life  a ‘simulacrum’ a ‘hyperreal’? ,
when we connect our avatars to Second life to attend class,
dance or just chat with other from Dublin and Ohio?

And that was the concept behind the video
to highlight the ‘virtual presence’.
to hightligh the Simulacrum the hyperreal Jean Baudrillard talks about.

Please enjoy the video.

Writing the script for the presentation

The theme for the presentation is “reality”

And we were given this brief:
“There is a growing tension between what is considered reality by different generations and groups in society.”

“We know it is possible to live predominantly in a virtual medium and this trend is likely to continue and be more easily afforded with ongoing technological advances.”

“Each participant is asked to explore what makes up reality to themselves and, in particular, how any virtual lives and online engagements are integrated into their daily reality.”

So first I researched what is reality and I got few definitions that resonates with what we were asked to explore.

from acclaimed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick
“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.”

And by Jean Baudrillard
“Simulacrum is not a copy of the real, but becomes truth in its own right: the hyperreal”

I am extracting information from the web and from books such as “Hello Avatar, Rise of the Networked Generation” by B. Coleman, and “Search engine society by Alexander Halavais.

I included this texts and quotations in the machinima/ video.

And I would like to talk about this more in depth during the presentation however we have only 2 mins each, so I need to get straight to the point, also design a slide or a series of slides with the rest of the team’s ideas that Garreth Dowd will put together in Power Point.

I am finding editing my own thoughts to 2 mins very difficult, maybe writing this blog will clarify what points I really interested it and how can I express them and therefore design my slide for the Power Point presentation and present and explain the concept behind the video.

SL_presentation

This is the slide I will be using for the presentation and I will talk about the quote and the concept behind the video.

So this is my script:

I wanted to talk about the quotation by Jean Baudrillard. “Simulacrum is not a copy of the real, but becomes truth in its own right: the hyperreal” and use our experience in Second Life as the context to analyze it.

To help me I extracted some text from the book  “Hello Avatar, Rise of the Networked Generation” by B. Coleman, chapter 4: Presence.

The text talks about the’ increasing simulation of presence’, or in another words ‘virtual presence’, and raise the concern regarding mistaking the virtual for the real in terms of ‘when simulating presence has become a standard aspect of how we understand a full engagement with one another.’  for example using social networks instead face to face experience.

So what happened with people that are not in the same geographical location as it is the case with Virtual Environment’s module and more specifically the interaction with my team.? The only presence we can all have together is by ‘virtual presence’. In the words of Coleman. “The primary purpose of using an avatar or simulacra of ourselves is they mark our sense of being together when we are physically apart”.

In the words of Clay Shirky “We embraced images with the arrival of ‘cyberspace’ and ‘virtual reality’, this described a realm where we could interact with data and interact with one another without regard of geographic locations.”

So if I put in context the words of Jean Baudrillard. “Simulacrum is not a copy of the real, but becomes truth in its own right: the hyperreal”

Therefore Second Life is a ‘simulacrum’ a ‘hyperreal’, when we connect our avatars to Second life to attend class, dance or just chat with other avatars.
And that was the concept behind the video to highlight the ‘virtual presence’. to hightligh the Simulacrum.  Please enjoy the video.

Making the machinima/video

“During the 90’s it was an explosion of the online landscape that at the time was a shift from the text only medium to one that was increasingly visual.”

“We embraced images with the arrival of ‘cyberspace’ and ‘virtual reality’, this described a realm where we could interact with data and interact with one another without regard of geographic locations.” Clay Shirky Foreword
Extracted from the book “Hello Avatar, Rise of the Networked Generation” by B. Coleman

Thinking about the concept of the video we wanted to show how Second Life allows you to embrace fantasy worlds, and allows you to interact with other people from all over the world something you can’t do in real life.

We also wanted to create a memento of the Second Life module, the locations we have visit, some totally surreal fantasy worlds, that we though would be the perfect example to make a distinction between ‘reality’ and ‘virtual reality’. We wanted to show the fun moments we had bonding as a team, and a showcase for future students, what kind of experience they can have if they attend Virtual Environments module.

You are responsible to make your experience in Second Life fun or dull.

When I try to explain to the rest of the DIT Visual Communication class 3rd and 4th years, what exactly we do in Second Life class, they seem confused first and they think that it must be strange to be looking at avatars during the class, they ask me if we are in a class room, also they think is a game.

This machinima will be presented at the end of the slide  presentation about our theme but also it’s important to have for the future as our Legacy to Second Life.

I still reference the machinima we did in first year to show what was our experience during the Virtual Envirinments module

Here is the post from 2 years ago explaining the process
https://qdelmoral.wordpress.com/2012/05/17/final-project/

We have enough material recorded from our visits and also we took photographs, during every class and visits. Unfortunately we never been able to meet the whole team at the same time on Sundays.

The raw mp4 video was sent by Nightt through Dropbox, over the course of several Sundays. I also recorded some of the visits.
But I haven’t some problems with the format they are mp4 files and iMovies only accept mov files. For other projects I use After Effects is more proffesional, but iMovies is more user friendly. I am looking at some info about how to convert mp4 files to mov files, but I did’t expect this obstacle as workload is already piling up.

First I tried to convert the mp4 files to mov following this website.

http://www.iskysoft.com/convert-mp4/convert-mp4-to-mov-on-mac.html

I downloaded iSkysoft to be able to convert Nightt’s mp4 files in to mov for iMovies but it creates a watermark unless I buy the full version.

So the quick solution for now is to record Nightt’s recording, I am playing it in iSkysoft and recording the screen with Quicktime.

I have been recording our visits with Quicktime player, it allows you to record the screen, other years I used other tools such as Snagit, but my trial version expired in 2012 so it was great the Dudley suggested Quicktime can record what is happening on the screen.

I have edited all the videos in iMovie and I have rendered it twice. I do regret now not adding photos (because I didn’t have videos back then) of the class with Sitearm Madonna, Elfay Pinkdot and Ham Rambler.

Maybe during the next few weeks I will do a final version but for the moment  this is the end result. Also I forgot to credit the amazing song by the band M83. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M83_(band) http://ilovem83.com/

The video had 70 views on the first 24 hours since I uploaded to Youtube and promoted on Facebook and Twitter the presentation next Thursday 1st of May in Second Life, I am showing the video in class to other students of Visual Communications in DIT so they can have a clearer view of what Second life is and what kind of experiences can you have.

Procrastination online

class

We were working with the teams during the second part of the class and also we received the feedback from Locks and John regarding the the blogs. I have to come back to the level of writing from my first posts. A reflection relevant to our own experience. Critical reflection of articles.

Maybe was putting a little more time making the video than writing on the blog. I am a visual person and I probably watch as an average of 10 videos a day from other artists, musicians, animation, inspirational videos.
I realized that when I choose my projects I try to create an animation or a video in nearly all the subjects.

And perhaps since I am not native English speaker, it takes me a lot of effort to express my thoughts. However as part of Visual Communication curriculum we are asked to write in several subjects such as Professional Practice, Design History, Thesis preparation, rationales or concepts for every single subject and even scripts for animations. Since I started in second year I have improved but I need to give more attention.

After the feedback I was reflecting about how much time we have available, how much time we waste, in virtual life and in real life. And as a student time is crucial, how much time it’s needed to successfully complete a project. How much procrastination or as typographer Jessica Hische procrastiworking is good or bad? Have virtual life affected out attention spam? How much procrastination we do online and in real life? I found this article from the Guardian on procrastination called “Procrastination: a student’s worst enemy? http://www.theguardian.com/education/mortarboard/2012/may/09/students-procrastinating-exams In the article talks about the state of the state of mind during work and procrastination and affirms “Beating procrastination takes commitment.”

There are some ” top tips to increase productivity”. “First, get rid of temptation. Define a space for “work” and don’t mix that with where you “play”. , associating your desk with work so strongly that you to leave her room to unwind. “It’s hard to switch to relax mode when you’re in the same environment,”
So what happen when you work in front of the computer and you are a click away to procrastination?

“In the article explains:  The same principle applies to your laptop. Once concentration has been broken – by checking emails, for instance – it takes 15 minutes to get back into the ‘work’ state of mind. Create a separate profile for study, where you can make use of Internet blocking apps such as Anti-Social.”

I don’t think this is the best solution, sometimes I have to work with up to 3 programs opened such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. Restart the computer just for 15 mins break wouldn’t be very practical. Finally in the article gives one other tip Secondly, work with restrictions. Make a mental contract with yourself to work for 30 minutes without interruption. You’ll be amazed at how efficient you can be, knowing you only need to power through a short space of time before you can take a break.”

When I am under pressure with many deadlines coming up like during the next two weeks, I use this technique, but I can only find this state of ‘will power’ when under pressure. In Visual Communication course, we have continues assessment and many presentations and deadlines on a weekly basis sometimes 3 times a week. I find really difficult to keep in the optimal state of mind, every day of every week, during the course, it drains your energy. So is good sometimes to allow yourself some procrastination.

Also I found that I need to trick my brain, when we are working on 7 projects at the same time and there is so little time, instead of thinking about all the tasks ahead at the same time, as if you have to climb a mountain, to think in one step at the time, one project at a time, set a timetable and stick to it, otherwise I get creative block and I waste an entire day unable to create anything.

At OFFSET 2012 lectures, they are like TED talks but this is once a year in Dublin where all the best designers and illustrators, show us their work and their design process, young and very talented typographer Jessica Hische‘s lecture gives the new term “Procrastiworking”. She define it as ” The work that you do when you don’t feel like doing your actual work. ” “Procrastination is useless but procrastiworking is productive”  she creates side projects that are more successful and useful that client based projects, such as her 52×52.org website project. http://vimeo.com/51128116  min 10:10.

jessica_hische So how Jessica Hische‘s words can  help me to improve my student experience by procrastiworking?  I will give one example, when we were given a Design brief for college, I choose to focus in something that I have close to my life, so primary research and implementation is easier to achieve successfully. For the ISTD project I chose to design stamps about cancer, as my mum was going through the illness and all I could do was research about it, it was in my mind constantly and I didn’t want this to affect my grades or consequently get a depression.

So the time I was “Procrastinating” researching about cancer I used it to turn it into “Procrastiworking”, at the end I created a booklet for Design for Print with Clare bell and Brenda Dermody for the ISTD project, with information about what is cancer and the causes and how it can be prevented by nutritional and lifestyle changes. I also designed a set of 10 stamps, postcards and posters to create awareness. The photographs are projections on skin of cancer facts, the concept was to show the emotional scars of those affected by cancer and their families. c_delMoral_ISTD_displayIstd_stamps

Regarding the Virtual Environments project I think procrastination in real life and online is a good theme to develop for the presentation. That I will analyzing more deeply in future posts.

If I wasn’t doing this module would visiting Second Life would be consider procrastination?

dancing2Finally I want to share a really very funny video of acclaimed DIT graduate Johnny Kelly about procrastination using stop motion, photography and animation.

Tips for presentations

3 April- 20143teachers sitearm2

Tips for presentations,

  • Twitter and social media.
  • Hashtags.
  • Virtual collaboration projects.
  • Presenting is a process.
  • Tools of the project.

We were given recommendations regarding planning presenting.

  • Who are we talking to.
  • Content
  • Audience analysis
  • Preparing
  • Working
  • Check with the rest of the team
  • Communicate with the team
  • Scripting (who says what)
  • Vocal presentation to the class
  • Sound check
  • After presentation defreef
  • Start with positive feedback
  • Valuable for the future (explain what we learnt)

Ways of communicating with the team Second Life, Skype, Dropbox, twitter, Facebook, mail.

Our team is communicating through twitter every time we are going to meet usually on Sundays, and we were sharing files on dropbox, however I think we need to find another way of effective communication and we need to plan the presentation, we will need a tool that writes more that 140 characters.

The time difference is proving to be a bog obstacle for the team to meet all at the same time. But I hope we can all overcome this issue and work towards our presentation.

We are gathering material and sharing it within the team but we need to start to plan, and editing on content and decide who says what.

I am a bit anxious about presenting to the class due to my accent and lack of fluency but as part of my Visual Communication course we present our work to others on a weekly basis, several days of the week, so it should not be a problem do it virtually.

Expectation for Blogs- feedback

20-3-14

During this class we received feedback, expectation for Blogs, class blogs analysis by Dudley.

  • Virtual environments blog is not an informal blog.
  • It will be part of out Virtual identity and push it foward on our career.
  • Feedback to each other.
  • At least one entry needs to be written every week,
  • Part of Branding, what kind of information we want to display.
  • Report on the progress and discoveries from the class and out own research.
  • More official, reflecting on what we have been doing.
  • What can be done or it should be.

From the reading as part of the assignments,

  • Reflect on those readings.
  • Some research, (new people)
  • Library research relevant to the project.
  • What is reality?. Or any other thoughts.
  • Outside from second life, exploring.
  • Citations or links on the blogs .

Also we were given tips to improve our writing and our experience in Virtual environments class.

  • Blog is open to the whole world clarify SL, refer it as Second Life not everybody will know what SL means.
  • Links of the places we visited.
  • Reflections on link
  • Footnotes and references. In links .
  • Humanities coloquiuum
  • Read other students blogs, comment
  • Build our community
  • Adding links of other blogs into our blogs.
  • Expresive and critical

Also Locks added :“ Following on from what Dudley has said…the more you write, the better you get. and start to develop your own “writing voice” and to remember that there is no right or wrong way to reflect… your reflections are your thoughts and while we can all engage with them and you…we cannot fault you, Locks Aichi: “so don’t be afraid to express your thoughts”

  • Unify brand of yourself.
  • Visual to textual.
  • The view and manner to express them to shape your identity.
  • Videos.
  • Feedback.
  • Blogs have to be more reflective rather than descriptive.
  • Relates to the project working on.
  • Discursive
  • Own view into play

These are the blogs of the Dublin students that also are part of my Visual Communications class:

Content creation examples

13-3-2014 Content creation examples and tips

During this class Ham mayor of Dublin and Sitearm visited us again, this time to give us an insight on content creation in Virtual environments,

Dublin Mayor explained that he designed virtual Dublin, for St Patrick he had an idea to have a virtual St Patrick parade, so he designed in Second Life some of Dublin most known landmarks but he has one set back, he had some issues with the clients displaying the brand of the Heineken building. he replied that if someone took a picture and post it on line that would not have the copyright issues.

At the end he could not use that design and also could not organize a virtual St Patrick Day’s parade due to legal age issues.

Too much regulation kills creativity, this is an example of over regulation can slow down promotion.

Dublin Mayor in Second Life gave us few questions to think about. one who owns intellectual property in second life and also content is not content until is not physically recorded. In this case the building or the Guinness brewery, he designed them in Second Life but never allowed to implement, which is unfortunate because if would have been a very effective way to promote Dublin.

content_class

Heineken building, Dublin

Picture  above is from google images to show what building Second Life Dublin Mayor Ham was talking about.

Part of the visual communication course I am taking part in a live branding project in college, promoting Phibsboro, my approach or strategy was a photographic,  showing hidden spots of Phibsboro such as the benches from Blessingtong street basin or the Serenity community garden but also promoting the area virtually, I designed for the campaign a logo in Bodoni that reads #phibsboro to promote the area in social media aimed not only members of the community or Dubliners in general but also national and international audience.

Using Second life as a medium of promotion could be interesting, I would like to contact, Second Life Mayor to see if we could promote Phibsboro in Second Life.

After Ham, Sitearm presented to us and she talked about intellectual property, as a case study he mentioned Martin Luther King speech.

This speech was written and communicated to a mass audience and the legacy for his words should be reproduced for the common good.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/28/i-have-a-dream-copyright_n_3829901.html

cannot be reproduced is another example of how over regulation can affect to pass on his words to future generations.

There is an interesting documentary Everything is a remix in youtube: “Remixing is a folk art but the techniques are the same ones used at any level of creation: copy, transform, and combine. You could even say that everything is a remix.”

In part 4 talks about copyright use and miss use of copyright and how the latest can affect creativity and progress. Min 17 explains the concept of copy, transform and combine. Multiple discovery min 22. Social evolution, and copy rights where ideas, what happens when ideas are regarded as property.

’From Prosumer to Produser: Understanding User-Led Content Creation‘ (accessed 03/07/14) by Prof Axel Bruns (Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland Institute of Technology) who explains his theory of user-led collaborative content creation.

Read: ‘User Generated Content and Virtual Worlds‘ (accessed 03/07/14) a paper on the legal background to creating content in an online context.

  • Old ideas have been discovered,
  • Prosumer, consumer and producer.
  • Prosumers
  • Producer – distributor – Consumer
  • Open source and wikipedia, constant revission of non product.
  • Heterarchy of participation.
  • Palimpsestic paths
  • produsage
